Final
Laurens Kaldeway was born and raised in Kenora, Ontario, Canada. He in fact did not go to college for photography, yet still has very high quality photos. The most important thing for Laurens is definitely his family. His kids were actually a huge part in what got him taking pictures and he uses them often as his models. Although Laurens is still only an amature photographer, he has a true talent in it and says that it, "is his love and passion".
Laurens has a very unique way of expressing himself. Kaldeway often uses things that happen is his house to take pictures of. He appeals to the emotions of mothers and fathers and the memories they also experienced with their kids. It's as if he tells stories to his viewers with his pictures. The memories of you or your kids losing teeth, the pain, the process and the joy after the tooth fairy comes. He takes ordinary objects around the house and puts them together perfectly.
Kaldeway is just using plain folks objects and putting them together. He is showing all his fans and viewers that you don't have to have the coolest things to take nice pictures. They are basically personal stories that he is sharing through photos. Road trips to the beach with the family, loosing teeth, getting a dog, he is expressing the emotions of these adventures through photography. He encourages other photographers that are just starting up, anything can make a great photo.
Personally, seeing Laurens Kaldeway's work has really encouraged me. My problem is usually finding the "right" object to take pictures of. He has shown me that it doesn't matter what you take pictures of, it is the way in which you take the photo that matters. Also, my photos usually do not connect on a deeper level as his do. He has shown me to take photos of things that really matter to me and not just take photos to get a grade.

"Salt and Pepper"

These photos are very similar yet different. I personally didn't have any clear salt and pepper shakers to use. However, I chose a nature background specifically to contrast salt shakers. Salt shakers are very man made luxuries so it was contrasting to the background. It seems fairly obvious that Laurens Kaldeway had a bit better of a camera than me. Although I did my best with my materials. To improve, I could've blurred the background better. |
"...but first, coffee!"

A big difference is in the quality of photo and lighting for our photos, his obviously being much better. I did not realize how much I tilted the scrabble words but it looks just fine either way. We both have the slight glare on the edge of the coffee. Overall, I think I did a solid job of imitating his image. |

In my mind, this was my worst out of my 3 imitation photos. It wasn't that great of lighting and was a weird place to take the photo. His background is much darker than mine and the background for the ipad is a little different. However, I think I did a solid job of placing the objects in the right place. I should've taken the photo not on an angle and more straight above. Overall, I did an alright job on this, but not my best out of the 3. |
I really enjoyed doing this project because it was cool seeing the image come together and really start looking like the original. The salt and pepper image was one that I really struggled with because I couldn't get the ground or background exactly right. The coffee image was definitely my favorite one to do because it was the one that looked most similar. It was a challenge to get the drink the right color because I had to use blue food coloring. The ipad photo was definitely my biggest challenge. The background was right, but I never could get the lighting right in that place or the angle right. Overall, I really liked doing this project and finding the balance in the images. Thank you for a great trimester Mrs. Giltner!
